What depth of gravel should I use?
There is no universal gravel depth for all beds, paths, bases and driveways. Use a thickness specified for your product and application. The calculator’s 4 in example is an editable measurement input, not engineering advice.
Read depth guidance in context
Sakrete’s cited all-purpose gravel sheet gives a 2–4 in drainage-base example for walks and slabs. That does not establish a universal gravel-driveway thickness. Product, application and supporting construction matter. The same sheet makes installation the end user’s responsibility.
For a vehicle-bearing surface or uncertain site conditions, ask a qualified local professional about the required build-up, subgrade, drainage and compaction. Then calculate each specified layer separately. A quantity estimate cannot check whether that design will support a load.
How much area does a cubic yard of gravel cover?
Coverage in square feet = 324 ÷ depth in inches. Before extras, one cubic yard covers 162 ft² at 2 in, 108 ft² at 3 in, or 81 ft² at 4 in. These are coverage calculations; choose the actual depth from your project specification.
How does depth change the amount of gravel?
At a fixed area, doubling the depth doubles the installed volume. For a 200 ft² footprint:
| Example depth | Volume before extras |
|---|---|
| 2 in | 1.2346 yd³ |
| 3 in | 1.8519 yd³ |
| 4 in | 2.4691 yd³ |
The table is arithmetic, not a depth recommendation. If your measured thickness varies, divide the area into sections with different depths rather than entering the deepest measurement for the whole job. For complex variation, obtain a site assessment instead of claiming a flat calculation measures terrain.
Loose and installed thickness
Clarify whether a specified depth describes the installed layer or the loose material delivered before compaction. If an adjustment is required, obtain the factor for that product and process. Do not automatically add a compaction percentage and then add the same allowance again under waste.
In the calculator, “extra ordering allowance” and “loose-volume adjustment” are separate. Both remain visible in the printed worksheet. The allowance guide explains their arithmetic and how to keep the assumptions clear.
