Material properties and densityGeneral gravel

Every preset starts at the same generic 1,600 kg/m³ assumption. Your supplier’s density is more reliable. Sources and limits.

Layers & area settings
Additional cutouts & shape options

Numeric cutouts are additional to saved polygon holes. Do not subtract the same hole twice.

Order allowances5% extra

Extra covers handling and measurement uncertainty. Add a separate loose-volume factor only if the supplier says installed dimensions need it. Do not count compaction twice.

Independent calculator sections are added together. Confirm no footprint overlap. Density, delivery and material suitability need supplier confirmation. This is a planning worksheet, not an order placed.

How much gravel do I need?

Multiply the area you want to cover by the installed depth to find the volume. Then add your chosen ordering allowance. To estimate weight, multiply volume by your supplier’s bulk density.

Volume = area × depth

For a rectangle measured in feet with depth in inches:

Cubic yards = length × width × depth ÷ 324

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Keep measured volume separate from extra ordering material. The calculator shows both, so you can see exactly what changes your order.

What does a “ton” mean?

A US short ton is 2,000 pounds (907.18474 kg). A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Neither is a fixed volume: the yards in a ton depend on material density.

Convert weight and volume with your density

How accurate is the weight?

Volume follows your measurements. Weight also depends on aggregate grading, moisture and compaction. All presets here start at a rounded 1,600 kg/m³ planning assumption. Use the supplier’s value before ordering by weight.
